MONSTERS OF ROCK - THE 1991 RUSSIAN BROADCAST The recording featured on this CD captures Metallica s performance at Monsters Of Rock at Tushino Airfield, Moscow, Russia on 21st September 1991, where the band played a blistering set in support of their eponymous Black album, performing a rich selection from the new record along with classic oldies and a few covers thrown in for good measure. During its heyday, the Monsters of Rock festival was a veritable Mecca for heavy metal fans across the globe. Started as a one off event at Donington Park in 1979, the initial show was conceived to form the perfect setting for Rainbow to close their 1980 tour. However, with a line-up that also included Judas Priest, Scorpions and Saxon, the festival attracted over 35,000 fans, and Monsters of Rock soon became a regular addition to the heavy metal calendar. From 1983 parallel festivals began appearing across Europe, and by 1991 dates were arranged in Poland, Hungry and Russia too. The 1991 events featured, as usual, a sterling line-up of rock acts, including AC/DC as headliners (whose UK performance was later released as the Live At Donnington DVD), with Metallica, M?tley Cr?e, Pantera and Queensryche in support. 1991 was one of four times that Metallica played the Monsters Of Rock fest, but listening to this recording again now, most fans will agree that this rarely heard set was probably their finest appearance.
