The West African country of Mali is considered the cradle of the blues, which deported slaves brought to the cotton fields of America. For centuries, traditional music has held together Mali's society. But Malis music is in danger. Radical Islamists lead Shariah in the north of the country, forbid dancing and secular music, destroying instruments and threatening the musicians. Many musicians fear for their lives and flee from the region around Timbuktu and Vidal.
