The opening song to arguably Bob Marley’s finest album, “Lively Up Yourself” is a perfect opener. The song is built upon a laid-back reggae beat, to which Marley composes a great, original melody and lyrics that never get too deep or wordy – it’s a good-time song done extremely well. Indeed, it’s a song which is hard to analyse – lyrically, it’s nothing much more than the title phrase, and the gorgeous chorus of “Lively up yourself/And don’t be no drag” and musically, it’s simple and doesn’t stretch the band or Marley too much. The song seems to glide along, and it’s certainly the most carefree song on the record, and one of Marley’s most popular songs throughout his career.
