In 2015, after a spell as the touring bass player for seminal chamber-pop band Cardinal, Corin Ashley set about recording the follow-up to his critically acclaimed 2013 album New Lion Terraces. In January of 2016, Corin suffered a stroke of the right parietal lobe that left him in the hospital for an extended stay, unable to move the fingers on his left hand and with a paralyzed vocal cord. As luck would have it, the neurologist was Dr. Gottfried Schlaug, a conservatory-trained organist who had made a 20 year study of the ways in which musicians recover from brain injuries. With Schalug's guidance, Corin embarked on what would amount to more than nine months of physical therapy, speech therapy, and vocal therapy, as he eventually re-learned to play guitar and sing, finally taking the stage again at the end of 2016. Broken Biscuits stands as a flag, firmly planted to guide future explorers who someday may find themselves navigating this difficult terrain.
