Copperhead's debut LP is one of the many mysteries in music history. Despite outstanding songs and first-class musicians, the group never became successful, but rather CBS cancelled the contract during the studio session for the second LP and scattered the musicians in all directions. The group was founded by John Cipollina after he left the band Quicksilver Messenger Service in 1970, together with his buddy Jim Murray. After a few changes of line-up, the original line-up (John Cipollina, Gary Philippet, Jim McPherson, Hutch Hutchinson and David Weber) finally got together and CBS signed the band in 1971. The music is a very good mix of West-Roast-Rock (Roller Derby Star, Kibitzer, Spin Spin), an emotional ballad (A Little Hand), psychedelic sounds (They`re Making A Monster) and songs which can be assigned to Hardrock (Kamikaze, Pawnshop Man, Wang Dang Do). Very well performed by hand and always dominated by Cipollina's unusual guitar language. The CD also features *Chameleon*, a single B-Side, which was not included on the first CD edition of Sony-CBS, and a pretty neat booklet.
