This recording from 1961 has enjoyed perennial popularity. It's easy to see why: pianist Alfred Brendel is by nearly universal agreement one of the great Beethoven interpreters, and this performance from early in his career shows his virtues at their best. His reading of the Piano Concerto No. 4 is simply classic. Balanced in every detail, it never goes to dynamic extremes or puts undue emphasis on any gesture.
