James Wesley Jackson, sparking a joint on stage, begins his introductory speech: “Never mix LSD with Chittlins or you will get high on the Hog.” He puts the joint out for a moment, then continues, “I pledge Groove Allegiance to the United Funk of Funkadelica, for which it stands one nation under a groove, a divine rhythm for the liberation of mindsight. You will be hearing ‘burning down the house’ — that means burn down the ghettos of the mind. Think! It’s not illegal yet.” And the band is introduced. On November 6, 1978, at The Capitol Theatre, Parliament-Funkadelic brought down the Mothership for all those in favor of the funk, busting out “Red Hot Mama”, a 25-minute “One Nation Under A Groove”, a nearly 30 minute “Flash Light”, and so many more favorites. This show is definitely one for the record books.
