Vivaldi's opera was first performed during the carnival in Venice in 1735. This recording features a virtuoso group of singers under the musical direction of OTTAVIO DANTONE and an orchestra that is closely familiar with VIVALDI's musical dialectic. The libretto is by Agostino Piovene, who also wrote the libretto for Handel's Tamerlano. The composer also chose the pasticcio form, incorporating arias from his own works as well as from operas by his contemporaries Geminiano Giacomelli, Riccardo Broschi and Johann Adolph Hasse Despite its composite character, Il Tamerlano is a complete musical drama, presenting a wide range of emotions and colours inspired by love and war. Particularly moving is Irene's famous aria of despair 'Sposa son disprezzata' from Act II of Giacomelli's opera, sung here by SOPHIE RENNERT, and Timur's passionate 'Dov'? la figlia? (Vivaldi's own aria from Act II, sung by BRUNO TADDIA) and 'Barbaro traditor', Bajazet's Act III aria by Broschi, here sung by FILIPPO MINECCIA in the role of Bajazet. Once again the Vivaldi Edition Vol. 65 is outstandingly equipped: a 112-page book, partly in German, contains the complete libretto as well as numerous photos and musicological commentaries
