On September 16, Toto will release a new audio/video package documenting a 1991 performance at Switzerland’s Montreux Jazz Festival. Toto: Live at Montreux 1991 features the veteran pop-rock group on its last tour with founding drummer Jeff Porcaro who, sadly, died the following year of a heart attack at age 38. The incarnation of Toto that appeared at Montreux was a short-lived version of the group that also included founding singer/keyboardist David Paich and guitarist Steve Lukather, as well as longtime bassist Mike Porcaro, who died last year after a battle with Lou Gehrig’s disease. The band’s set included songs from its then-upcoming album Kingdom of Desire, as well as the hits “Africa” and “Rosanna,” and covers of Jimi Hendrix‘s “Red House” and Sly and the Family Stone‘s “I Want to Take You Higher.” Reflecting on the band’s 1991 Montreux show, Lukather says, “From the perspective of the members of Toto, the Montreux Jazz Festival is amongst the most revered events staged in the world. Our association, as a band, and individuals, is something we are deeply proud of.” Lukather adds that watching the archival video was a bittersweet experience for him. “The most important thing is, you can see and hear the love we have for each other,” the guitar virtuoso notes. “There were tears and a lot of laughter as the memories of this night and this final tour with Jeff were captured.
