Originally, »Six Pianos« was to be written for all the pianos in a piano store; however, the sound turned out to be too compact. Therefore, Steve Reich limited himself to six pianos in good listening contact to each other. A short rhythmic-melodic figure undergoes a series of repetitions and variations, played by some of the musicians synchronously and by with a few bars of delay. The individual lines merge in a kind of musical mandala, charging the listener with meditative tension. Before artists and audience enter a collective minimal trance, however, all ears present should be pricked for the artists’ individual performances: without exception, the musicians form part of the contemporary music scene between electronics, Hip-hop, jazz and pop.
