LAMONT, BRUCE - Broken Limps Excite No Pity (Sealed) (LP)

He is part of the Electronic Noise Squad Corrections House (with Mike IX Williams from EyeHateGod, Scott Kelly from Neurosis and the long-time creative partner Sanford Parker), the jazz prog-hardcore trio Brain Tentacles (with Keelhaul bassist Aaron Dallison and Grind drummer par excellence Dave Witte) and dozens of other big and small projects, in a constantly changing environment. Broken Limbs Excite No Pity, Lamont's second solo album is recorded in Chicago's Minbal Studios with Sanford Parker behind the desk. Lamont sings sadly harmoniously with himself and plays saxophone, guitar, percussion and electronic music. An 11-minute epic opens;"Excite No Pity" begins with several crying saxophones and deep, almost Bill Laswell-like bass drones, but is eventually overtaken by burning electronic sounds. Maclean" distorts an acoustic guitar melody with tape effects to prevent it from sounding too much like a Kansas song, while "Goodbye Electric Sunday" is a unique blend of spaghetti western soundtrack and beat poetry over an almost bouncing groove. Lamont uses his voice as an instrument almost as often as he uses it to communicate his lyrics. On "Neither Spare Nor Dispose" he whines and moans as loops of powerfully beaten acoustic guitar and rumbling percussion thunder pass by and wash over it statically like a wave. At its base is music, the sound (Noise, if you like) organized in patterns. And these sounds don't necessarily have to be pretty as long as the patterns are convincing. Bruce Lamont understands this intuitively and has proven the ability to create hypnotic, ominous, emotionally resonant and even somehow transcendent arrangements of patterned sound. They're not the kind of "songs"you hear on the radio. They are literally sound art. This is an album in which you dip your head like a bucket of ice water, and when you pull it out, you're not the same person you were before.
