In the 90s the amateurism de luxe of Malkmus ex-band Pavement influenced pretty much every alternative band. No twist in the song was too bizarre, no lyrics too strange. After the split, Malkmus replaced musical irregularities with virtuosity. Almost at least. That's why his second solo album sounds awesome. And sometimes the old, ludicrous greatness breaks through. Pig Lib "with" (Do not feed the) Oyster "has his over song. This scrambling anthem proves that Malkmus can do so much more than average songwriter-pop. Well, he knows now how the word "conventional" spells itself. Thank goodness he still makes clever little mistakes. (cs)
