Gareth Liddiard said it best when he described MOD CON as occupying a mysterious territory somewhere "between the Bangles and Black Flag." The trails that MOD CON - Erica Dunn (guitar, vocals), Sara Retallick (bass), and Raquel Solier (drums) - take us down on Modern Convenience are thick with a wasteland of souls, social politics, ethical change and experimentation. Recorded over the Easter weekend in 2017 with Gareth Liddiard (The Drones/ T.F.S) at his home in the Goulburn Valley, Modern Convenience is a compelling debut record, which documents the bands creative alchemy and unique approach to song writing. "The isolated rural backdrop provided a perfect combination of clear-cut focus and cabin fever to get the job done," explains Dunn. Noisy, subversively catchy and rhythmically sophisticated, opening cut, "Scorpio" sets the tone for Modern Convenience. "Submit" retains the urgency, bite and the bristling, shard-syncopated rhythm hooks. "Neighbourhood" continues with themes of introspection and menace. While anthems of personal resilience contain as much raw humanity as they do a savvy grasp of the impossible loneliness of the times, especially apparent in "Kidney Auction Blues." "Get in Front of Me, Satan" is jagged, but woozy. Tender, but aggressive. All the time, angular guitar solos, duo vocals and syncopated rhythms hold tight to Modern Convenience's core. These are carnivorous stories, with pangs of sadness and joy.
