GULDA,FRIEDRICH - Bach: Clavichord (Sealed) (CD)

Gulda plays Bach on the clavichord. What sounds so simple holds a treasure of musical depth and power. Around 1978 the famous pianist Friedrich Gulda recorded his clavichord playing on several occasions. Whether at small concerts or in his morning playing exercises, in which he buried himself s?ance-like in the music - something unique emerged from the unique combination of brilliant musician, effective instrument and outstanding composer. The clavichord led a shadowy existence after its heyday until the middle of the 18th century. Its simple construction, in which a keystroke through a small metal pin, called a tangent, vibrates the string, creates a unique sound. In the course of the Early Music Movement, Friedrich Gulda was one of the most prominent pianists to return to this instrument. Besides the organ, it was the favourite instrument of Johann Sebastian Bach, who wrote many of his works on it and for it. Originally recorded for self-control, the tapes were recorded at different locations and in different situations: Sometimes in a small concert hall, in a hotel room or in Gulda's K?nstler-Klause in Wei?enbach on Lake Attersee. His student Thomas Knapp was astonished when one day his teacher presented the tapes to him and asked him: Mogst di hab'n? And who wouldn't have said yes? The simple recording technique and the poor condition of the now 40-year-old tapes resulted in an elaborate restoration process followed by digital processing. Although the professionally processed recordings do not shine with outstanding sound quality, they do have a surprisingly intimate significance as a charismatic musician's testimony.
