For the new album Breaking Cycles Ntjam Rosie has left her creative comfort zone and faced new musical challenges. This time she approached songwriting differently and found an answer to the question why she actually does all this: to give people courage and inspiration. The songs on Breaking Cycles, their fifth studio album, still consist of the unmistakable Ntjam Rosie ingredients, but now focus more on the groove. She was inspired by the R&B of the 1990s (Janet Jackson, Erykah Badu, SWV, Aaliyah) as well as by the soul of the South African singer Letta Mbulu and the modern, alternative R&B of Kelela, Nao or Daniel Ceasar. Breaking Cycles is the first release of Ntjam Rosie on o-tone music/edel:kultur. The album was produced by Vincent Helbers (Flowriders). All songs were written by Ntjam Rosie and Vincent Helbers and recorded together with drummer Richard Spaven (Jose James, 4Hero, Flying Lotus) and London bassist Robin Mullarkey (Jacob Collier, Laura Mvula) as well as Bart Wirtz (saxophone) and Teus Nobel (trumpet).
