Isla Eckinger, born 1939 in Dornach near Basel, Switzerland, is not a "modern" or "old-fashioned" musician. He is one beyond everything fashionable. Since he changed his ancestral instrument, the trombone, to the double bass in the early sixties he quickly became one of the most sought-after partners of European musicians like Dusko Goykovich, George Gruntz, Joe Haider, Stephane Grapelli as well as Waldron, Buck Clayton and many more. Eckinger always insisted on his warm, singing, swinging humane and space-creating bass, the ambitious newcomer likes to be "mainstream". smile at me.
