If you asked musicians today where in the world famous recording studios are, they would probably come up with answers: the Abbey Road studios in London, where the Beatles recorded; the Capitol studios in Los Angeles, where Frank Sinatra sang; Hitsville Studios in Detroit, the delivery room for most Motown songs. and: the MPS-Studios in Villingen-Schwenningen, where the label of the same name was founded more than 50 years ago and musicians from the USA, Europe or Asia were able to realize their dreams like in no other place in the world. More than 500 albums were created in the attics of a backyard building on Richthofenstra?e, almost all of them are considered rarities today. For most of the musicians who recorded there, the time at MPS was the highlight of their career. Or the beginning. The 32-year-old Berlin pianist Julia Kadel and her trio have just recorded their third album at this historic location. And thus brought back to life an almost forgotten institution in the fast-moving music business after almost 40 years. In 1982 the studio and the label closed down. Kadel is the first female musician to record another album for MPS in the original studio. Everything is still there: The Telefunken magnetic tape machines, the old analog mixing console in a greenish steel body with the bakelite controls, even the microphones above the grand piano are still arranged exactly as Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer once adjusted them.
