A bit different - Slighty Different - is the name of the debut album of the Mashed Peas. What squashed peas have to do with jazz can presumably only be discovered by including the album title, because it is actually a promise: It's actually a bit different. It starts with the country of origin of the musicians. It's not the USA and it's not Sweden or UK or any other country from the circle of the usual suspects. Instead, the country of origin is the good old alpine republic of Austria. With eight tracks including intro and outro, the album is formally a clear and well-assorted thing. The titles combine all kinds of fun: big band sound (circles) and electro, hip-hop advances, LP crackling and vocals (higher stakes). A trace of compatriot Zawinul (Kalogria) here, a trace of funk there (Give and Get). The Mashed Peas are definitely too wide for a drawer. And they control what they do. If every album were such a complete package, music would be even more fun.
