Ferndal is the stylistically formative debut album of the band. It features the first songs written by Lestaya (cello) and Sorathiel (vocals, bass) for a Black Metal band. The three classic works on the album were recorded with guest musicians at different locations. Overture, the sonorous and bombastic introduction to the album, as well as the organ parts in Ungelebtes Leben were recorded in a Catholic church. The middle piece by Ferndal, Piano Quintet in G minor 'Arntor, a warrior' was recorded live in the concert hall with a guest pianist and 3 additional cellists. The composition is an adaptation of Windir's classic Arntor, a Windir, transferred to classical harmony and worked out with classical composition techniques in Ferndal's very own way - the result is a melacholy, moving work somewhere between classical music and Black Metal. These different aspects show Ferndal as a young band between traditional Black Metal aggression and the more subtle melancholy of classical music.
