He named himself after the historical African commander Hannibal, and his band the Sunrise Orchestra. Despite its energy occasionally reminiscent of contemporary free jazz, the music of the sextet remained rhythmically bound, tonally and deeply rooted in blues and spirituals. In 1977, the Sunrise Orchestra had a rousing performance at the Berlin Jazztage, which was released on record shortly afterwards. In 1981 Hannibal set a monument to the victims of a mass murderer with the LP "The Angels Of Atlanta". For this he worked together with a gospel choir.
