Descendents have announced their next studio album, 9th & Walnut—out July 23 via Epitaph. The band’s classic lineup of vocalist Milo Aukerman, bassist Tony Lombardo, guitarist Frank Navetta, and drummer Bill Stevenson began work on the record in 2002, but had not finished the album by the time of Navetta’s death in 2008. In a new interview with Rolling Stone, it’s revealed that, last year, Stevenson sent the 2002 recordings to Aukerman, who recorded his vocals at home before sending them back to Stevenson for mixing. 9th & Walnut takes its title from the band’s old Long Beach practice space. The record includes some of Descendents’ earliest written material, drafted from 1977-1980. Among the entries are previously unreleased recordings of Descendents’ debut tracks “Ride the Wild” and “It’s a Hectic World,” featuring Aukerman on vocals. (The songs were originally released in 1979 with Navetta and Lombardo, prior to Aukerman joining the band in 1980.) The album closes with a cover of Dave Clark Five’s “Glad All Over.”
